    four or five friends recommended this book before i wrote off to amazon to order it. i can understand why it has a viral following. it's great--good writing, gripping story, solid characters. well worth reading and my favourite new book of 2008. (*****)

home for the holidays

we have stayed in england for christmas. everyone keeps asking me what it's like being here for the holidays and it honestly seems quite natural, except during the christmas carol service at church. flipping through the song sheets, all the carols are familiar, but as we start to sing, i realize the melodies aren't. angels from the realms of glory is sung to the tune of angels we have heard on high. angels we have heard on high is another tune altogether. o little town of bethlehem is unrecognizable and we have a different version of lo how a rose ere blooming.

oh there's no place like home for the holidays.
