the handle to our microwave broke last year. it was otherwise a perfectly good appliance, and richard and i were loath to toss it in the landfill (or even have it sent off to china for recycling), so we superglued the handle back on. it broke again after a month, and we glued it again. this cycle repeated about ten times until last week, when i got fed up and begged richard to forego our environmental principles so we could have a microwave that opened and closed properly.
richard agreed wholeheartedly, so we went to comet, our local appliance store, to get a new one. we bought our last one at costco from the choice of two they had without any deliberation so i just wasn't prepared for the 37 (yes thirty-seven) different models we had to choose from this time around. talk about the paradox of choice. the first one was too small, second one too big. the third was too expensive, fourth had a cheap handle and we didn't want to repeat that mistake, fifth, cheap buttons. sixth, no dial for setting the time. etc. etc. etc. we finally left with one that is twice the size and twice as expensive as the one we replaced but it opens and closes and heats food.
