i'm sad to say we said goodbye today to the fantastic cloth nappy service that we've been using since madeline was born over a year ago and are now another family contributing to the nappy landfill problem.
the service we have been using, nifty nappies, has been great. i have to admit, though, i was nervous about it before starting the service. it is small company and the owner, margaret, seemed a little doubtful last year about whether she would continue delivering to our area. i expected to pay her the first four weeks and suddenly have her not show up, leaving me in the lurch. but i was wrong: she has been nothing short of brilliant all year--calling to check on nappy fit during the early days, giving us loads of different wraps and styles to try as maddie grew, and brainstorming with me about madeline's eczema a few months ago.
unfortunately about six weeks ago, maddie outgrew the wraps she was in, and despite trying about five brands, we have been unable to find one that fits properly now. margaret sent a bunch of samples, and i picked the three that were the best, but madeline leaked from all of them. margaret said that because so few babies use reusables, the nappy companies design them to fit the "average" sized baby, and some of styles that were better for larger or smaller than average kids have been discontinued.
unfortunately this is not as helpful for our ten-pound-at-birth 85th percentile child. so, after much procrastination, we finally called and cancelled. this morning, margaret's driver came and picked up everything we had left. it makes me quite sad.
