i rewatched whale rider on dvd this evening. it's a magical film, where a young girl breaks down the sexist barriers inherent in her culture's traditions and help her tribe survive. i had forgotten how much i enjoyed it the first time, and it was equally great this time around.

while i got a little confused between the characters for the first half of this book, and i wished i had a little more political context, i enjoyed this. set in pre-revolutionary china, this looks at a russian girl who falls in love with a chinese communist.
