"every great magic trick consists of three acts. the first act is called "the pledge"; the magician shows you something ordinary, but of course... it probably isn't. the second act is called "the turn"; the magician makes his ordinary some thing do something extraordinary. now if you're looking for the secret... you won't find it, that's why there's a third act called, "the prestige"; this is the part with the twists and turns, where lives hang in the balance, and you see something shocking you've never seen before." [from the prestige]
richard picked up the dvd for the movie the prestige during our trip into staines yesterday. i had never heard of this movie, so had no expectations whatsoever, and in fact wasn't terribly excited when i heard it was about two magicians battling it out in victorian london. but i was enjoying it enough that when i started to get sleepy last night i asked richard if we could pause it and finish it another night.
tonight we watched the end of the movie. i have to admit: it's really clever. it twists and turns and makes you think. i really enjoyed it.
You should check out "The Illusionist."
It is also about a magician, and set in the same time period and stars Ed Norton (fight club).
It came out before The Prestige, and actually opened the Seattle International Film Festival. I enjoyed it a lot.
