when we were in the states, lots of strangers came up to talk to us about madeline. their most frequent comment when they turned to talk to her directly was "you're so beautiful!" in a sort of goo-goo baby voice.
it was very nice, and i comment on it only because it's not something we say in england. the english are more likely to say "aren't you gorgeous?" or "aren't you clever?" in a similar situation. we use the term "beautiful" here but rarely in reference to a child of walking age.
