i watched the world cup tonight, but to be honest, i can't claim to be a rugby fan, in bad or fair weather.
recently, everyone in england has become an f1 fan. you can't listen to the radio without hearing "educated" commentary on lewis hamilton and his performance. most years, we could record the race and watch it later in the week with very little risk of hearing the result, but this year you can't turn on the radio on monday morning without hearing how lewis fared versus alonso and kimi.
i have to admit, i used to think motor racing was really, really boring. cars, going around and round a track over and over and over...why would anyone waste time watching that? for the first couple of seasons i watched with richard, i picked my favourite racers based on how cute they were, and gave extra points for those who were articulate in the post-race interviews.
nearly ten years of f1 viewing has made me a more educated and therefore more interested viewer. the sport is actually very strategic, and the more you watch, the more you learn about pit stop strategy, the politics of team racing and details of how the cars are built. i know who the drivers are, what teams they race for, and even in many cases who they drove for last year. like most other sports, the more you know, the more fascinating it is.
for years my favourite driver has been jenson button, who sadly hasn't had the best of years. luckily, unless you're fernando alonso, lewis is hard to dislike. assuming he wins the grand prix in brazil tomorrow, his life story is like a disney movie. it's fun to see someone like this succeed, and i would love to see him with the championship tomorrow.
go lewis!
