i am an absentee voter for the state of washington, and my ballot for the general election arrived in the post today. it came with a voters' pamphlet that presents details on the issues and backgrounds on the candidates. these pamphlets are always very educational and entertaining.
this year, in addition to the candidate descriptions, the office of the secretary of state and king county elections has printed all of the washington state symbols on the pamphlet's cover. this is a very handy list which includes the standard symbols like the tree (western hemlock) and flower (coast rhododendron), and others that are much, much more obscure.
bird: willow goldfinch
mammal: orca
insect: green darner dragonfly
fruit: apple
grass: bluebunch wheatgrass
gem: petrified wood
tree: western hemlock
fossil: columbian mammouth
frog: pacific chorus frog
vegetable: walla walla sweet onion
dance: square dance
ship: lady washington
fish: steelhead trout
folk song: "roll on, columbia, roll on"
song: "washington, my home"

I especially liked the state gem.
