richard and i were closet american idol fans in season one. we voted for kelly clarkson and planned to go to the tour when the top 12 came to seattle. we weren't able to attend at the last minute, and we were so embarrassed to have bought tickets we didn't try to sell them on! frankly i think we were some of the show's only local fans over the age of 14 at that point so probably we wouldn't have been able to sell them for much.
how times change. now american idol is broadcast worldwide and the final show of season seven this week apparently broke records with over 90 million votes. we have stayed loyal and watch each season. like many other people we thought this was one of the best in terms of quality. the top 12 were all reasonable performers and there were at least five or six who are truly great.
when the season hit the top 12, richard and i decided to have a little competition and guess at that point what order we expected the final 12 to finish. we each made our list, not based on which performers we liked necessarily, but based on expected order of elimination. we didn't know everyone's names and couldn't check the website, given the fact that the uk is behind the us in broadcasting and we didn't want to spoil anything. so we made our list using the nicknames we used in talking about the contestants. here was my order:
- david a
- syesha
- nose guy (perhaps not obvious--david cook because he looked down his nose when he sang!)
- irish girl
- little girl
- down under
- castro
- shannon's david (thus named because i liked this david and always felt simon was harsh)
- brooke
- rocker
- chiquita
- horse girl
other fans may notice that i didn't get any of these right. luckily neither did richard so our competition was a draw. we were both really happy with the outcome. david cook is a real star and such a smart, nice guy.
