in kindergarten, we had a break in the mid-morning when we each were given a small carton of either regular or chocolate milk. our teacher, mrs willson, would ask for a show of hands for who wanted chocolate and who wanted white, and would then assign two lucky students to go and fetch the right number of cartons from the cooler at the end of the corridor.
i remember pulling a little red wagon down the hallway with a friend, mumbling "ten chocolate, nine white, ten chocolate, nine white, ten chocolate, nine white." the hallway was dimly lit, and when we got to the cooler, we lifted the heavy insulated lid and carefully counted the right quantities into the wagon before pulling it back to the waiting class. it was a great excursion.
